Tom Kertes ~ About Me

I am an early childhood educator with a background in human rights advocacy. I am the founder of Learner’s College of Early Childhood Education and have worked with young children since 1994. I have also been a community organizer and popular educator, working with homeless day labourers, public housing residents, and others advancing universal dignity and an end to poverty.

PAST EXPERIENCE
I have been a preschool teacher, early learning specialist and child care provider for six years. I am currently a child care provider at the University of British Columbia and work with toddlers and preschoolers in a split-age program.
I have also worked with homeless day labourers in Baltimore, MD and with public housing residents in Washington, DC.
For nine years I was a co-owner and managing partner of an 8,000 square foot children’s book and toy store near Seattle, WA. There I taught preschool classes and led science-infused storytelling assemblies for thousands of children at local schools.
I have also served as Policy Advisor to Ontario’s College of Early Childhood Educators and have worked as an early childhood education instructor at Seneca College.

LIBERATION LEARNING
All my work is connected by a deep commitment to the principles of liberation learning, or to the idea that when people work together to intentionally create and sustain communities centred on unconditional respect and universal dignity we all expand our capacity as human beings. Core to my work with young children and adults alike are the values of respect, dignity, and shared responsibility.
I recognize children as born worthy of unconditional respect and as fully capable at achieving their human potential. I recognize both children and adults as full members of the community. Everyone, regardless of age, should be recognized for their unique contributions to community life and should be included and supported in the life of the community.
